What is Marketing?
Marketing isn’t just advertising, in fact sometimes marketing has no need for advertising at all.
To quote business guru ‘Peter Drucker’, “marketing is too important for the marketing department”, and here’s why…
Simply put, marketing as a business function relates to how you as a business communicate, and making sure that the relevant messages get issued to the relevant people at the relevant time (in a controlled manner).
Communication in the generic sense, both within the business – to your staff -, and outside of the business to your potential and existing customers. So the stakeholders in your business. This includes staff as much as your customers.
For your marketing to work effectively, the communications you issue as a business must be directly linked to the vision you have for the culture of your business (how you wish to be perceived) as well as your current business objectives.
Put this to the test, think about your favourite product, then think about the messages that are issued in relation to that product and try and work out why they are there – what are they trying to achieve.
Do the messages support your feelings towards this product? If they do it’s no accident, and it takes a lot of hard work to make it this way and that is why you need a marketing strategy.
